See attached. This is a Zebra Danio with a curved spine sitting on the bottom of the tank looks like he's gasping for air.

Also worth noting that I have already had the new Gourami die which had a white fungus on it's back. I bought him on Saturday, he was lethargic which I put down to stress, then he lost use of one of his fins and I thought he had damaged it. His tail was ragged and he eventually started laying against bogwood etc and gasping for air. This morning found him dead. Took him to pet store who had 'no idea' what it was but thought was bacterial (going from his fungus) and gave a refund together with free Pimafix.

Any ideas whether it is bacterial and am proceeding correctly? The rest of the tank has been affected and are starting to be lethargic and showing little interest in food (which is saying something given how hungry my molly used to be...)

Symptoms sound like nitrate poisoning, fish gasping at the bottom of the tank, white patches, frayed fins. What is your nitrate reading?

I did a 40% water change and vacuumed the gravel on Saturday morning in readiness for the new fish as thought levels could spike once new fish added.

I took the water to Pets At home along with the dead Gouram yesterday eveningi, they tested it and said all ok, blamed everything on the bacterial infection and gave me the treatment.

I'll get own kit today and test this afternoon, a further 2 Gourami (1 moonlight and 1 honey) are showing the same symptoms this morning so I'm going to do my best to save them.

If not Nitrate, any other ideas what it could be?

Only thing I know for nitate is water changes, then add live plants to control nitrate but you'll still need to change water to keep it down.

Tomm if its not nitrate then maybe bacteria or lymphocytosis. Keep water clean, reduce stress, keep lights off for a couple days.
Keep updating so we can see how progresses. Antibiotics work fast for bacteria so if no immediate improvement then I say its not bacteria.

Hi all

I've been trying to get a testing kit, however there isn't a pet shop near where I work in Liverpool and work's been so manic I haven't been able to get to a Pets at Home after work this week.

Anyway, in the absence of a testing kit I've been treating for Nitrate poisoning as advised. I've been doing daily water changes of 10-20%/day as well as adding treatment for bacteria as I previously said.

My second (previously healthy) Gourami died yesterday, he was lying there on the floor for 3-4 days acting dead, but still breathing. I attach a photo of what he looked like. Yesterday morning he just wasn't breathing, at least he isn't suffering any more.

Anyway, I just came home from work to find the Balloon Molly showing the same signs that the Gourami were showing in their early stages. I've taken a video to show what happens if I lift her to the top of the tank, it looks like she's trying to swim but can't get to the top of the tank. Once she gets to the bottom she just swims on one side along the bottom. I can't attach the video here but can send it to anyone if they want to see it.

I'd be even more devastated if the balloon molly went. I think it's related to what went on before, unless everyone thinks something else? Perhaps swim bladder? All other fish are acting fine now, including the other molly.

just an update on this. I finally got a testing kit and saw the nitrate is still through the roof!

I've replaced the filter sponges as think previous ones were defective. Will continue to make water changes and test it tomorrow, however given the nitrate hasn't fallen what I've been seeing has definitely been nitrate poisoning. :-(
