I just cycled with platies and they do seem to be quite hardy. If you choose them make sure you get at least two females to one male. They're very easy to sex. I would also recommend you get males who start off noticeably smaller than your females. They're supposed to be a little smaller at maturity but I have a mutant monster who rules the tank.
