Hello everyone. I was directed here from the betta forum so this is my first time posting here. :) I recently picked up a 55 gal and I have no idea what I should stock it with! I took some suggestions and looked around a bit myself and this is what I have so far (definitely not putting them all together! Just a rough idea of what I can have):

Glass/Ghost catfish
Bristlenose pleco
Corydoras
Angelfish
Betta sorority
Rummynose tetras

Any other suggestions or tips about the above fish?

Also, what do you guys think about a school of discus in a 55 gal?

if you can heavily plant it, a betta sorority would work out great.
I just go my rummy nose tetras and LURVE them! The guy at the fish store was telling me how his buddy has a 200 gallon tank with atleast 300 rummy nose tetras in there. O.O

I believe Glass Catfish are very speific and not very easy to care for, I could be wrong tho. They've never attracted me.

Lastly, Discus are expensive. If you can afford, go ahead! I love discus, I wish I had the monies!

Discus usually need larger tanks i think, since they have very particular water parameter needs. THOUGH you can probably do them in 55 idk for sure

What fish do you want the MOST though?

I'm not too sure about that yet. The discus sure have caught my eye but apparently they're hard to care for and are expensive so I might go with Angelfish for now or find nice colored gouramis. I will have several kuhli loaches and two bristle nose pleco for sure but that's all that's set in stone right now.

^Jeff is right. water hardness and pH are big indicators as to what fish will do well in your tank.

if your water is soft, angels or gourami would be lovely. thekoimaiden has honey gourami and tetra and loaches together and they make a lovely group. in my 29 gallon I have a pair of angels, bronze cories, and a bristle nose pleco. I love them.

What are your source water parameters (GH, pH) and are you going to use live plants? Those may make some of your decisions for you.

Jeff.
+1

gotta know your source water before you get fish. wrong water = big headache depending what type of fish you put in there. kinda like a puzzle when it comes to stocking a tank but you have some control of what pieces your going to use.

I concur with others on the water parameters. And just to let you know, we have fish profiles; the names that shaded in earlier posts can be clicked as a link to that fish's profile. You will find important data on water, compatibility, minimum tank sizes, etc.

And welcome to TFK.:-D
