my boyfriend and i are trying to clean out the fish aquarium so we can get it up and running. there is a small problem. the tank has a filmy build up on it. we have tried several things to clean the glass but nothing works. he thinks the build up is from the sealent that was used to seal it. if anyone can help me figure this out i would appreciate it.

First of all how old is the tank, and is it glass or Acrylic? If a tank sits long enough and depending what chemicals was put in it couldv'e caused the hazing. I have a saltwater tank that the glass cover began to haze over and I have yet to find something that will remove it. I've even tried a razer blade and it didn't work. The only time that it seems to goaway is when it's wet. So if you havn't put water in it, try and see if it is still there. I'll try to find out more on getting rid of it and get back to you cuz I would like to know to.

Pictures are really useful in this type of situation. Your boyfriend thinks its sealant, well the silicone is only along the edges on the inside of tanks, so it is most likely something else

It may be hard water, or calcium build up; unlikely that it is sealant. If it is glass you can scrub it with an abrasive algae scrubber and some aquarium salt. don't try it with acrylic, it will scratch.

Calcium deposits are easier to clean with a rag soaked in muriatic acid.

:lol: I've cleaned the filthiest glass bottles with coarse sea salt (no additives). Its cheap and you can even leave it inside for a few days. Don't use on acrylic though it will scratch. Fill up the tank with water and see if you can still see the film. I've got some kind of deposit that shows on the upper part of my fish tank when the water evaporates, but when i top it up you can't see it. Good luck and let us know which solution worked best.

I just bought a 55 gallon tank today and it had a pretty nasty film built up on it also. I cleaned it with hot water and aquarium salt. It came right off. Do not use any chemicals on the inside it will kill the fish...(no glass cleaners). After it dried it still had a bit of a film. So I wiped it down with dry paper towels and it cleaned right up...

Try vinegar, it works wonders!
