Hello - from a new member in Thailand
For as long as I can remember I have been keeping fish and my first were eight Golden Orfe which we had in a garden pond at home. They outgrew the pond and my father gave them to a private school which had a huge Victorian pond with a fountain where I saw all eight of them 25 years later and probably approaching 20” long. The gardener who had been there at the time my father donated the fish said they had done well on assortment of foods including unwanted sandwiches from the pupils!
Since that day I have usually had a tank or two of fish somewhere and for a while I was heavily into marine fish, coral and invertebrates – but that is story for another time here..
I had a job which took me all over the world and so my memories of childhood and student days in England are fast fading. I am now living in Thailand which is where I have retired. Thailand is a beautiful country full of unbelievable wildlife, national parks and of course mountain streams and huge rivers teeming with fish and supporting an abundance of aquatic plants.
I have often searched forums for advice when needed, but never joined one. Now I have time I hope to be contributing when I can. I have had a lot of experience to date with fish that are endemic to Thailand and I have good friends in fish conservation departments albeit they are desperately short of funding.
We are just about to move home from the north of Thailand near the border with Laos to Central Thailand and we are exchanging the banks of the mighty Mekong River to live close to the joining of the Nan and Ping Rivers to form the Chao Phraya river in Nakhon Sawan.
For some time now I have been growing on asian Arowana and whilst being highly enjoyable it has also become very profitable. So we have decided to establish a fish farm and additionally run a retail outlet to sell our fish to the local aquarists and maybe export.
I have kept most of the fish endemic to Thailand including the giant freshwater stingray (Himantura chaophraya) which is found in both the Mekong and Chao Phraya rivers. It is now critically endangered so we are going to try and breed them – I know I have less than a 1% chance, but we may be successful. Additionally we shall be breeding Arowana and will try breeding some other species endemic to Thailand.

You can never know everything about tropical fish keeping and I learn something every time I read these columns and I appreciate the information given. If in return I can be of any help to members here, now that I have downtime in my retirement; I will be pleased to assist where possible. I wish you all successes in your fish keeping and I look forward to the future with you.
