Hello ppl newbie here! just wanted to ask a few questions so feel free to answer! :)

Ok at the moment I have an aqua one aquastart 500 aquarium which is 65 litres (about 17 gallons) and has an under ground filter, a hood and a light which is not set up yet..... But after reading some threads/posts saying that UGF's are bad I want to know why they are bad and what filter should I get instead?

I am going to be getting a fancy (oranda) goldfish to go in this setup along with maybe 3-4 smaller fish or shrimp/snails.... So what fish etc would you guys suggest could go with a goldfish? Also do fancy goldfish suffer alot in cycling because I couldn't possibly watch a cute golfish suffer :(

Lauren

p.s sorry if I have asked some stupid questions but I do  my goldfish

Hi and welcome aboard.

I will only post what I know about UGFs. Other than that my expertise on filtration is rather limited.
The reason why UGFs were not allowed is that in planted tanks, you need a very deep substrate(6-8 cm) which will not allow the UGF to work properly. Another thing whatever substrate you use, only gravel and other coarse substrate will work as UGFs tend to become clogged. Cleaning of the UGF is a PITA especially when your tank has been doing well. This would mean stripping down of the whole structure. Otherwise you just allow dead/anaerobic spots to carry on.:dunno:

Goldfish are far too small for a 17 gallons unfortunately. Most will grow to 6-10 inches. If you've seen Blueblue48's avatar, the goldfish there is a fancy goldfish and yet its size is estimated to be around 10 inches. You can go with danios to cycle the tank and try white clouds.:) White clouds are very stunning fish. I would love to have them but my tank is mainly tropical. They are coldwater and will not do well in warm temperatures. You don't need heater to keep white clouds and danios however danios would require a heater during winter.:)

Good luck.:)

Thats just a minimum size, and sites like that always say the wrong size so people have a problem with fish outgrowing thier tank. And fancy goldfish do get rather large rather quickly. My brother had a faintail that he bought when it was small about 3 months ago, now it is about 6 inches. So just be carefull with what you get.

the real minumum for gold fish is around 30 gallons. Try to find minimums or websites that dont sell fish since those are more accurate
