I can't stand how heaters stuck along the aquarium walls look...I'm also seeking a heater that radiates more evenly throughout the tank...rather than in just the general area (like most basic units)...any suggestions for a far less than rich (far far less) fish tank owner with a couple of 125g tanks....? Any advice would be very welcomed....thank u...

The only option I know of when you don't like the way those units looks in inline heaters, or canisters that come with internal heating neither of which are cheap. However some heaters come in a casing that helps it blend into the back ground.

Thank you SF.......any suggestions with DIY canister heaters? I can see me doing something horribly wrong, but maybe an enclosed unit (additional canister) attached somehow to my canister filter...would need someway of regulating heat.....ever heard of anybody doing this?

I have no experience or knowledge of putting a heater in a canister. I do know however that some people set up sump tanks, and put their heaters in that so that as water goes through the sump it is heated and then returned to the tank. You may want to look up ways to do that.

My tanks are unheated, but As far as I know you don't want to mess around with heaters - get what you need and don't cheap out is what I have heard. Too, in a tank that big you'll probably be better off with 2 heaters in each.

Two 125s are impressive - I imagine you have some nice fish in them. One way or another, to stock a tank that big costs some money - think of the cost of the heaters as security for your investment.

Heaters can be run horizontally too, so you can put them in the back at the bottom - very well hidden.

I use a black plastic unit and a black background. Can't see the heater other then the power light... But the whole thing is tucked beside a vertical piece of driftwood.... so even if there were no background it's not noticeable. I am switching to an inline heater as a primary mainly because I need more heat in the winter.

I wouldn't mess with DIY heaters... electricity and water don't mix well.

I agree with all the above comments. In a 125 , you really do need 2 in-tank heaters, a heated sump, an in-line heater, or a canister w/built in heat. By the time you did any DIY that is reliable, you'd come out better having bought something off the shelf in terms of safety and reliability.

Check on-line, many vendors are having sales on heaters at the moment. I recommend something black like the Aqueon Pros that you can hide pretty easily, as mentioned already.

Actually, that's what mine is, Aqueon Pro. Works well... can't recall what I payed but I bought it on a boxing day sale. A 300W inline Hydor should come in under $60.

Thanks everybody...your responses were awesome....the more I think of it, the worse my idea of a diy heater sounds....i'd probably electricute myself, my fish, my kid, and my dog by the time I'm done...I'm going to go with two, as suggested - just hide them well....along with real plants, I usually hide my filter and powerhead equiptment with fake ones and/or wood....sorry for the late response, I was zzzzzzzz out....waking up and seeing this though was wonerful....thank you all again!!!!
