I've always loved guppies, and I know they may not be the most exciting fish, but I decided to take up a breeding operation.

My current setup has 13 females in a 20g, 8 males in a 10g, and a separate 10g for the fry.

I've had a lot of loss getting to this point, I lost all of the females that I started with, and most of the males.
I think things have finally settled down now, but I'm still in the emptying-out stage of my females.

So far, I've had 6 birthings (henceforth referred to as "litters" until I find out the actual term).

12/15/13 - 11 babies from a now-deceased female dubbed "Big Mama." I've got some pretty red snakeskin males from one.

12/26/13 - 17 babies from an all-yellow female, also now deceased.

1/7/14 - 14 babies from a yellow female with a yellow-red divided tail, also now deceased.

1/16/14 - 11 females saved from an unexpected birth from a red and black tailed female.

1/26/14 - 45 babies from a yellow lace female. Still alive, but hunchbacked. Parasites or TB?

2/3/14 - 41 babies from a gorgeous girl with a rainbow-striped tail.

Congrats on your successful spawns ( I think its called spawning even with live bearers?) I've alwayswanted to set up a guppy breeding system but somehow never made it happen. I've bred cichlids in the past but gave up on it in favor of a more varied stock of fish. There's great reward in breeding fish and growing the cream of your crop. I'm so jealous! I would want a fourth tank to seperate the older fry from the newborns, but I'm sure you know what your doing and have the setup that works best for you.
Can you post pics of your fish?
Good luck with all your doing!

Alright, some pictures. The lighting isn't so great, I only have my phone camera, and i can't get the stupid fish to stay still for their glamour shots...

More baby pics!

I pulled 2 of the babies from the 12/15 spawning, and put them in a betta cup to get some pics!

The larger (redder tail) is just over 3/4" long!

Thanks!

My secret is to work on Fridays. That way, I get to be one of the first people to see the new guppies when they come in! If I see a really special one, I pull them from the tank at the start of my shift. I'm a cheater like that.

Most of these (all but 2 males and 4 females) are from PetSmart, believe it or not! Male "Fancy" guppies are $2.23 with PetPerks until March 2nd.

Ugh. I'm a walking billboard. At least I love my job...

Babies today!

11 healthy fry and one that still had the egg sac attached. That one didn't make it, unfortunately.

I have a few pics of the mama, the first one is just a good pic, and in the second, you can see how big her tail fin is!

Congratulations! When my daughter was a baby / toddler, it was a tank of guppies that kept her mesmerized (and quiet).
