I know it's still early, but I'd like to start thinking about what fish now. 'Cause, you know, I like fish. Now hold on, here's why I'm searching for fish for a classroom: I will be the co-president of my high school's environmental club and I was put in charge of the "animal husbandry" aspect of the club. I got that job last year when I headed the fish tank "restoration" process and researched the right fish for the job. The one moderator of the club, however, didn't get the fish I asked for, but it worked out OK like that too. In fact, I have been awarded the title of "person who made fish last for the whole school year", and I still have one in one of my tanks (others died at school for unknown reasons, as I was not there to examine the bodies before the teachers threw them out), and I named it One, but that's a different story.
Anyways, I need to think of a fish suitable for life in a high school. The students don't harm them (at least not that I know of in my time there), but it could get pretty crowded, so they'll need to not be shy or easily frightened. The AC and heat aren't of the highest quality, so the room temperature usually fluctuates with the seasons. I'll only be able to care for them once a week unless an emergency, and they need to spend weekends alone with their feeder blocks.
I considered Mollies and Platys, but through previous experience, I know they need a lot of maintenance and are very messy. I considered female Bettas in a small group also. I've contemplated fancy goldfish, but thought it might be hard to find a match it wouldn't eat or be harmed by, as there's only space for one and it might become lonely, and also the high need of maintenance. I thought of White Cloud Minnows and Neon Tetras, but I'm not sure if there's enough space for that, either. Someone suggested a freshwater eel, but I'm thinking once again about the space and temperament.
What would you put in a 20g tank? Maybe a mini community of mini fish or something to keep it interesting... Or something completely different!
We had Glofish Skirt Tetras and ADFs last year and they had Chichlids before that. Equipped in the tank are a heater, a light hood, some decorations, gravel that's been washed and reused for as long as I've been there (two years done, with this year, it'll be three) and a filter. They probably would enjoy something new swimming through their tank...
