Hey everyone,

A buddy of mine has a goldfish and has had it for about 5 years now. It's a pretty decent size and everything. The goldfish looks fine but his eyes. I noticed when I was just there that his eyes almost look a little hollow. And there bulged out a little more. Is this a sign of aging/death? Just wondering :D

What type of Goldfish is it? Buldging eyes isn't typically a good sign. Could be dropsy... There is a chance too that the bulging is from an injury to eyes and is healing.

I would tell him to test the water, and use Epsom salt which should reduce the swelling of the eyes.

To add to what is already posted, it could also be an indication of poor water quality in the tank. I would check ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH levels asap. There are a number of different illnesses in goldfish that can cause these symptoms, but the description isn't detailed enough to determine much, and water quality plays a big part in diagnosing the problem. If it were dropsy, I would be looking for protruding scales on the fish, as this is one of the tell tale signs of that disease. If the only problem appears to be with the eyes, then I'm tempted to say it sounds like something else entirely. Are the eyes also cloudy? Are there any other symptoms besides the eye problems? Are there other fish in the tank? If so, how do those look? The more info you can give us, the better and faster we can help.
