Hi there, I'm new to this site but have often visited it for some helpful advice when I first began my aquarium. I've had a ten gallon tank for nearly 8 months now and decided to do an upgrade. I bought a 20 gallon tank new pump and decorations and all of that and waited for the water to cycle before swapping my fish. They really love all the room they have but I have one problem.

I bought a glass canopy due to the outrageous prices of some I've seen online and at the pet store. The back strip is some vinyl material according to the box and says, "easy customization" for filters and other aquarium equipment. Well call my silly but I measured out and used marker to try and cut out slots for my filter, heater, and light wires but the scissors sort of broke in two in my hands. I was wondering if there is a specific way to safely and efficiently cut the back strip and customize it to my tank. There is currently a 3 inch gap at the back of my aquarium and my white clouds are jumpers. I'm afraid to come home from work to a dried and dead fish on the floor.

Please help! Perhaps I can purchase another back strip that is easier to manage? Thanks!

You can't use flimsy scissors to cut the plastic back. I cut it far back, close to the axis. I go slow - it's not a simple snip by any means, as you know. Slow and steady wins the race.
