Well I thought I'd remove one of my plants as it was to big for my tank. So instead I'd thought I'd get a piece of pre-soaked would from my local fish shop, advice given 'shouldn't need any soaking but just in case put it in some water for a couple of days if water goes dirty change it until it stops". I soaked wood for two days no change in water colour, I put it in my tank and two days later ginger water.

Checked my water levels nitrite 1, nitrate 20, ammonia .5, pH 7.2 . Just changed 30% of water.

Will this gingerness damage my fish?

The tannins from the wood will not harm the fish. Some actually prefer it as that's what they live in naturally. In excess it can lower your Ph a lil over time if your Gh is low enough. Not something I would really worry about. If you want it gone you can do multiple water changes or add carbon to your filter.

I'm glad it won't damage my fish. At the moment I have a cheap filter that doesn't allow for carbon to be added. So ginger it is.

Over time with enough water changes it come out. The only downside I can see is if it is dark enough some plants can struggle I think due to not getting enough light. Those are most high light plants through. Most low light plants will probably be fine. Tho I don't know as I have never had black water tanks.
