Hello, we are new to fish. We had two fantails, but one died over the weekend and the other seems very lonely. Are there any other, maybe smaller fish that would be compatible (and not high maintenance)? We have a 10 gal tank and really don't have the space to upgrade to a bigger tank, which I realize we would have to do eventually if we added another fantail.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

For goldfish excluding comets (common goldfish) my friend (who has been raising and breeding goldfish for years now) goes by the 10 gallon to 1 goldfish rule. Goldfish are very messy fish, and also grow quite large. I honestly do not think 1 goldfish in a 10 gallon is adequate, its small and they will be alone. Others may disagree and say 2 goldfish to a 30 gallon, so just know that what you have right now isnt the best. When goldfish are overstocked, don't have enough room, etc., they secrete a poison to the other fish that kills all the other fish. It may kill them too, not sure there. That may have been why your other one died, but who knows, i'm assuming its still small.

As for compatibility, I don't think there is anything out there. Goldfish require cold water, most freshwater fish require warmer water. I looked at petco.com's compatibility chart, it said plecos and loaches may be able to co exist, but #1 you don't have the room and #2 its petco, so I don't trust them 100%.
