Its probably silly, but I'm wondering if the white fine filter pad holds much bneficial bacteria? I bought some replacements since my current one is falling apart; do you all think it would be fine to replace it or should I run the filter with both for a bit? I'd imagine most of the biological filtration is in the filter balls/ tubes or whatever they are.

It should be fine to replace. The white filter pads are for mechanical filtration. There will be some bb on it but most will be in your bioballs.

I change mine sometimes in the eheims. Those bioballs are packed with more bb then the average biological media.. Youre safe.

Most biomedias are marketing ploys more then anything. Irregardless you can usually change 1/3 media in a filter safely provided you don't disturb the bioload too much. Quilt batting is good for fine filtration. Its also cheap which is why its the only thing in my eheim.
