My observation is that newborn livebearers tend to hang out at the top of the tank. I've had the best success with avoiding the cannabilism with with floating plants, like Water Sprite.

I agree with the above. If your not keeping adults in there is would be fine. You can actually use a plant weight and some fishing line, tie off the plant and anchor so the plant branches break or meet the top. Lokks cool too.
