Sorry to hear about your fish loss Columnaris is pretty nasty as you've found out. If you want to try to save any remaining fish, you will have to go the antibiotic route and do frequent water changes.
Don't let one bad experience bring you down. If you have to start over, toss everything except equipment and use a bleach solution to wash the tank and filter parts, heater etc. and do not re-use any filter pads. You'll have to re-cycle the tank and then only add one or two fish at a time so you don't get an ammonia spike after you quarantine them (I QT for a month) before adding them to the main tank.
