We have lots of snails in our 30L biOrb and we were just wondering what lettuce leaf is meant to go in the bottom to attract said snails so we can get rid of them.

Thank you :)

Just put a normal garden lettuce leaf in, rinsed thoroughly, weighted down and left in overnight.

Then lift out in the morning and hopefully there should be a lot of snails on it.

What kind of snails do you have, ramshorns?

I have no idea to be honest. They multiply at ridiculous rates and they're about 1/2cm long or smaller. How can I identify them?

Are they more of a cone shape? Like this?

If not, could you post a pic of them?

I can't get a clear photo of any of them as they're tiny and my phone camera isn't that good.

They're quite similar to that last photo but they're fatter and a lot smaller. Is there a good aquatic snail website with photos at all that you know of?

Hi fluffin.

What works very well is a piece of peeled cucumber on a toothpick. You can easily stick this into the gravel. Snails (and your fish probably, too) will love this additional food.
Put it into the tank when the light go out and check in after app. 2-3 hours. You will be surprised how much snails will sit on this piece of cucumber.

However, too much snails might be a sign of overfeeding. To keep the snail population in it´s limit you might consider to feed the fish less for a while. The more food the snails find the more they will breed themselves.

I hope that works out for ya.

Would you be open to putting a clown loach in your tank? They'll crunch up all your snails no problem. I had a snail problem before, and threw my clown loach into my planted tank, and it took care of the snails right away.

Oh....I just checked the conversion and I guess that's only 7.8 gallons. I thought that it'd be closer to 20 g. Why can't we just go metric like everyone else! Stubborn Americans

For me as a German living in the U.S. it´s always a problem with the metrics. I found a website which has a tool that does the work for me. :D
