I set up a DIY co2 system a while back and it seemed to be working well with bubbles coming out of my glass diffuser. Then I realized that the bubbles were reaching the surface and being wasted. I tested it and the results support my observation: the co2 is around 4-5 ppm. I've already tried doing a bleach soak (2 scoops of bleach to 10 scoops of water) but it didnt help much. What should I do to get the bubbles to dissolve?? Any advice would be welcome.

I use a water forced mechanism to dissolve the bubbles. for this you need to get an internal filter as small as possible. The tube needs to be put close to the impeller so that the bubbles gets trapped in the impeller and broken into smaller bubbles. The outlet of the pump is then connected to a bottle with open bottom. The bottle should be kept vertical so that the water flows downwards. The bubbles coming out of the motor will be then forced to go down and eventually will be dissolved completely. I have got this working with 100%. I will try to upload a diagram, but below given is the video at

I don't think that would work with the filter I have, my filter doesn't even appear to have an impeller (at least not around the intake).

how big is your aquarium? the filter i am talking about is not the filter you use for water filtration. you have to get a new one, if you don't have one. It may cost $10 or so.

Not very big, only 5 gallons.

ok, for that the water forced method may not be suitable. Though some bubbles escape, the glass diffuser would work just fine. Do you have much water movement in the surface. I guess, if you have lot of water movement in the surface, there are chances that CO2 would escape ever after it is dissolved.

I too have a glass diffuser and a DIY system. Did you install a bubble counter? I am just curious if this additional bottle is necessary when using a glass difuser with ceramic disk? I appreciate any feedback.
