I would look at lowes and you should be able to come pretty close, realize most things are sold without bulbs.

This would need to be retrofitted into a raingutter or something to place over the tank.
Shop Metalux 24-in Fluorescent Strip Light at Lowes.com

Less DIY but over the $25 plus does need 2 T8 bulbs.
Shop Utilitech 24-in Fluorescent Wrap Light at Lowes.com

If you keep looking at lowes and other local stores to you, you may find better options.

Other then that it may be cheapest to check the Goodwill regularly for a large desk lamp/clamp on lamp that is incandescent and then just put some spiral CFLs in it.

Hello Flint:
from your post I have concluded that you are a very knowledgeable and capable individual with style beyond the rain gutter solution. It is very easy to make a metal hood to hold any lighting system.

All you need is a piece of metal thinner than 30 gauge, a pair of red metal snips , pop rivet’s and up here in NY they are called flanging pliers down south they are called tongs .

If you provide the numbers I would be willing to lay-out a pattern for you.

Hello M_31:
I guess that style is a matter of the beholder like beauty, for me rain gutters falls a little short though some folks might find the rain gutter solution satisfactory.

The important numbers as you said are the tank length and light fixture size. Get your numbers together and go to the local hvac fabricator to make the hood then, if you don’t wish to do it yourself.

All you do is take a one dimensional lay-out and use it to make a three dimensional object that exist in time and space.

A one-half dimensional man,

pop :)

2 months later while delving the bowels of TFK, I find this hahaa. When I went to drop off the 75G tank at Sang's place, she had plexy glass over the tank...works perfect.

$8 and free shipping if you have amazon prime for this: Amazon.com : Source One LLC 1/8 - Feet Thick 12 x 12 Inches Acrylic Plexiglass Sheet, Clear : Office Products

Cut it in half (few ways to do that) and you have a full top hood. Cut holes in for the filters and heater wires..etc.

Get a desk lamp rated high enough wattage for 6500k CFL bulbs or something...and that's about...20/25 bucks. Good luck!

Ewwwwww.....

Only caution with plexi is it will warp if it gets too hot. Funny you mention Fox as I just bought a filter from her very recently that needed some coaxing.

Theres a way to make some pretty slick sliding glass tops too using plastic trim thats usually in the flooring section at stores. I actually like them more then the typical hinged tops, kinda amazed no one makes them specifically for tanks. Works best with glass which some stores sell and cut pretty cheap.
