What sort of lighting do you have in your tank? That's going to be a big factor in what you can plant. I'm having pretty good luck with anarchis and java ferns in a low light tank (less than 1W per gallon). Anarchis is usually cheap, I regularly see bunches for $2 at my lfs and even the chain stores.
