I have a 30 gallon tank. Right now I have a Eclipes bio-filter and a crappy internal filter and the water looks good. The more I learn, the more I think I would rather get rid of both and have a canister filter. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons? Also how bout' a good one that's not $100!

Are you doing a planted tank? If so, make sure your cannister filter doesn't have carbon. It will remove the nutrients from the plant food. I've got an Eheim and really like it, very quiet.

I don't know too much about the pros and cons but I do know, don't go cheap with the filters.

As for $100, Eheim does have a filter that goes up to 35gal that is ~$70, but if you're lucky, you can get it cheaper. I know mine I got for $80 off, but it was the <160gal model.

I'm liking the Fluval one. It's $100 but I'm thinking it's worth it in the long run. I really like the idea of differant media together. Right now I have the Fluval rings in my filter along with the carbon but everything doesn't exactly fit well. I'm hoping to do a planted tank in the future. I'm not doing too good with the plants I have in there now so I may not.

I am also running a 30 gallon setup and I have the Eheim 2213 I picked it up for $60 at www.drsfostersmith.com, I think if you do a google search you can get a $10 off coupon also (look, I'm in college, I'm cheap).

The Eheim does a great job, its so simple that you really could put any kind of filter media in it that you like. I have an old Penguin HOB filter that I also run some times just to keep it working in case the canister fails (don't want any ammonia spikes do we).

eheim all the way- its the best you can get- you dont have to get the pro one, the cannister classic range rocks!- my eheim has been running for 5 years not a problem, any fluval owners out there that can say that???
