I have a fluval 103 canister filter it has recently lost filtering power. I have cleaned out the filters, I have cleaned the impeller I have cleaned out the pipe work but still reduced power output.

I have put an extra filter in my tank for now but I do need help solve my problem.

hi
i know you've given it a good clean……have you double checked the impeller
for cracks ?
you can pick one up pretty cheap i think from ebay.
if you bought it new…are you still in warranty ? if so take it back.

Always a good suggestion when something isn't working right. Although for me it's usually out of frustration.

You check the hoses? Is the output clogged? An abstraction in the intake? Perhaps at the quick connect?

Also check to make sure it's not airlocked sometimes they will trap an air bubble in the can an it will reduce flow.

R

Yup - give the filter a little rock back and forth and see if air comes out the outflow.

Yes, yes check all the things listed. Make sure the impeller is free moving, no bars broken or cracked on it. I have indeed smacked and rocked my canister filter.... it has no primer to start it ... ya really old!!!! so that is the only way to start it up sometimes or to get the rattles out of it. Make sure the cover plate over the impeller has not lost it's locking tabs too. Make sure it's seated and locked over the impeller.

Keep us posted on what you find.

Make sure the filter knows you appreciate more than just it's pump.

And now it's stopped again. I'll be able to clean it thoroughly tomorrow.

Checked intake pipe, inlet port covered in algae. ?possibly to close to substrate, inch cut off pipe. Pipe full of algae, replacing pipe.

Pipes replaced and shortened inlet pipe in tank so as not to be as close to substrate.

Here's my invaluable piece of equipment for cleaning filter and parts.

It's a small bottle brush for cleaning teats on baby bottles.

Since you stripped and cleaned the filter... remember to watch for a mini cycle. keep your test kit and bucket near by. Glad the filter is working again. Did you say this tank is running 2? so you might be ok?
