Are you going to put in live plants? If so I recommend a substrate like Fluval Stratum or similar substrate under the gravel as sand just isn't as good for live plants. That being said Sand is easier to vacuum clean than gravel to remove fish poop and other detritus that only settles on it - wheras with gravel the detritus sinks in between it.

According to my little knowledge, Many cichlid species require sand substrate to thrive because eating sand particles aids in digestion. Goldfish, on the other hand, are at risk of developing an intestinal blockage if they accidentally consume sand and should therefore always be housed in gravel substrate.
