Long story short, I used to have two aquariums, but a few years ago, I set up a much larger one and merged them. Thus, I had a a school of Black Skirt Tetras and a school of Flame Tetras now living together.

Fast forward to yesterday. I noticed that, sadly, one of my flame tetras passed away. I've read that the minimum number you should have is five to keep them happy, and I have four of the flame, and seven of the black skirt. They usually hang out together, so my question is, do I need to go out and find a few more flame tetras, or will they be content with their black skirt buddies?

You're probably fine, those numbers are just guidelines. If the four have a behavioral change, then there's an issue. Sounds like both schools are comforable in their tank.
