I was thinking of getting a 10 gal tank and I really want to put a Betta in there. Since I would have extra room, I was wondering if I could put some platies or mollies in there.

I don't have very much experience with Betta fish, but I think you'd run into problems mixing these two in a tank that size, especially. Betta would be very likely to go after the bright fins of the live-bearers. Personally, I think a 10g tank with only one Betta fish is a lovely set up! You could add in a snail, or perhaps an African Dwarf Frog, if your fish is tolerant. . .

Depending on the Betta and how many Platy you have, the Platy can be the aggressors and fin-nippers. Not sure, but I think Platy like cooler water than Betta are comfortable with.

Snails and shrimp are typical Betta chums. Some keepers squeeze in 5 or 6 Cory cats. But that's not really fair to the Cory.

Platys may be too large for a 10gal with a betta. You could try two, I'd go with the variatus type as they tend to be more wild. Maybe six Least Killies as they are small and can hide well.

Ohh, right. I forgot that Platy get big. I had two males who liked to sneak up behind my Plakat and nibble his anal and caudal. More might keep them occupied, but wouldn't fit in the tank.

Of course when I mentioned Corydora, I meant Pygmy Cory or Panda's or ...that other small breed I forgot the name of just now.

What about those Killifish? Don't they like cooler water, >74*?

Aren't killifish brackish fish?

There are many different killifish, and some do prefer brackish water.
To the best of my knowledge, the majority of species that are commonly available in the hobby are typically freshwater fish. Among these, some can also be found in brackish - it depends on which fish, and where they're from!
The same holds true with temperatures, different fish have different requirements, some prefer the cooler side of water - but certainly not all. As with any fish - be sure to do the necessary research before bringing one home!

. . . Many of the Killi's that I've seen are showy little things, and brightly colored. . . I'm not so sure that I would be comfortable putting these in with a Betta - but I've never kept them, and my betta fish experience is limited to one - so again, more research is needed here!
