ok so when i was going fish shopping for my 55 gallon tank to give my angel fish a friend and add a few more fish in there like some decent size teras i came across some strawberry and blueberry teras.now they store employee told me they were dyed and i remember reading a few articles about dyed fish they're colorful looking and interesting but i know it isn't right to do that to an animal so i decided to buy two of each color just to save the poor things but now i just realized when the dye wears off will it harm my other fish in the tank?

i have 2 silver dollars-(didn't realize how big washington and benjamine will get nd i know i'm going to rehouse them not right now though)

my pleco( i know plecos get big but i'm not getting rid of my little lance just yet poor guy has already jump from home to home plus he was free and they were desperate to give the guy a home and no i can't just take him back since the store won't take fish back)

and then i have 2 angels nemo and marlin(we thought nemo was a bit bigger when we got marlin they stick to each other like glue i'm just praying they are both male since i was told it was a gender mix tank)

then i have the four berry tetras espeon,slyveon,glaceon,and vaporeon(yes i named them after pokemon eveelutions don't judge me.i have two neons in another tank named after team rocket XD)

everyone is healthy and happy in the tank and water is cycling fine but i m just wondering if the dye from my tetras will harm the other fish or will they be fine when the dye wear's off in a few months

everyone is very active and swimming around they drive my cats crazy except the pleco who is nocternoule and won't come out til the tank light is off that's the only way i can get him to eat as for the other fish i'm trying to get them use to swimming to the top to eat since they are to use to being fed from the bottom of the tanks

No it won't hurt your other fish, it only hurts the fish that were traumatized by it's application.
Buying those fish did nothing more than perpetuate their existence by giving a money to a retailer for them, which encourages said retailer to buy more of them, so more of them need to be made.

yup. Product is reordered when it sells. It's not reordered when it doesn't sell. That's just the way of retail.

Same goes for these people that buy sick and dying bettas to "rescue" them. They don't understand how everything is connected, and that buying such fish only perpetuates their continued poor care. And then they complain about how the store keeps them, as if they aren't part of the problem. Best thing would be for them to die in the store, but that doesn't provide a warm and fuzzy feeling so no one wants to hear that.

I had to convince my wife that while the brightly colored fish might be eyecatching, the process of creating such a product is pretty close to animal cruelty.

Another issue is the mutant " electric blue" jack dempseys and dwarf gouramis. No dye is involved, but these fish look totaly unnatural and in my eyes are nowhere near as attractive as the "real" fish. Many electric blues have unatural shaped bodies and unusualy docile personalities. I wonder what % of each spawn is culls that cannot be sold.

On a happier note- I love your fishes names! And pokemom was such a huge part of my kids lives that I fell in love with the show too. I love it when people name their fishbecause it shows that they feel a connection to them and really care for there health and safety.

That is not true. Glofish were genetically modified, and because of that they pass on their colors. It's in their DNA.

Yes Genetic modification is one of several methods and from what I've read seems not to be as cruel.
I will spare you the details of how it is all done.

You can also breed them with normal tetras and danios for an interesting result!

Several methods of what? Altering fish?

I'm familiar with how it's done. There's zero cruelty in breeding the GM fish, which is how the fish for sale are produced. It is no different than producing regular fish.

If one wants to debate whether it was cruel to create glofish in the first place, then that's a whole different matter. One would need to understand the purpose for which they were first created in order to form an informed opinion on the matter.

You can also breed them with normal tetras and danios for an interesting result!

Breeding geneticly modified fish is not cruel; like jaysee said, its a completely different discussion. Its just my opinion that I don't like it, but there is no cruelty to the animals. I worry about creating an animal that is not as attractive or healthy or fiesty as the original, its all about dollars and cents, I know, but ...

Glofish were created to be water quality indicators. They were supposed to glow when toxins were present, but they just glowed all the time. So, moving to the consumer market, the failure became a success.

No doubt a case could be made that the process of creating them was cruel. But that is done and over with now, and we are here today. I think it's safe to assume that they've perfected the process by now, with regards to the creation of new lines.

Yes I agree that the dye does usually wear off and No we really shouldn't buy these kinds of fish as it just encourages the breeders to make more. If we don't buy them, they won't bring in more. Post a pic of your tank if you can ashtreelogger, we'd love to see it.
