We have babies! Papa is a longfin but I don't think momma is. She may not even be a bristlenose. Maybe someone here can identify her type? These videos aren't the best quality and are rather long, but if you're into watching babies, they may interest you. :-D
Awww papa mad....yous in trouble lol! Wow 20...hmm...got a buttload of tanks lol? How big is papa? Um...i dunno what kinda pleco mama is...sorry...i just cories recently thats about all i know of catfish/suckermouth fish.
He's a character but the momma is personality + -- I only have the one tank.. Don't know what I'm gonna do with all of them! If they would get along I'd keep them all, but I hear the males are territorial.
Don't know what size the male is ..do you measure from nose to where the tail starts or all the way to the end of the tail? Without the tail he is about 4 inches.
I think nose to tail you measure...sounds like a big fishy! How big is your tank? I think you can sell them to fish stores...but i dunno...maybe see if there is an aquarium or fish club in your area....i know theres a bunch around here...just a thought lol.
Well, nose to tail I'd guess he's about 6-7 inches. I've got a 46 gallon but it's a bowfront, so there is less bottom area than a rectangle. I guess Petco or PetSmart might buy them, but I hate the thought of that. Never thought of looking up a fish club - thank you for suggestion!!! At least I'll know they won't go to some kid with his/her first aquarium and die.
Thanks. I got the male and the guy threw in the female for free. I thought she was a male because they fought at first, but I guess they were courting. lol -- The male got back into the cave yesterday and was acting as if he were stuffing eggs into the same niche ---- I almost had a heart attack. Picked it up to look inside and saw...thankfully...nothing. I hear they won't reproduce as much if there are a lot of them, so I'm going to keep as many as I can.
How many can you have in a 46 gallon? It's a bowfront which means it doesn't have as much bottom area as a normal rectangle.
This shows the momma at the beginning, taking some of the babies on a zucchini ride LOL Then there is the big papa next to one of the babies. Hard to believe they will eventually be that big!
Both of the adults are overfed... I know this, but it can't be helped, the babies need food!
Yes that big one is a character. The babies are all over his tail, but he doesn't mind. In the next video, you'll see the momma use her tail to protect the babies. She swishes it towards them as if to round them up. She does this will her wafers too. LOL
Listen, I had to crop the video before posting and although it wasn't suppose to change the aspect ratio, I think it did because they look much wider in the video than they really are. If your momma fish has a huge belly and you haven't overfed her, I bet she is holding eggs. Watch the male to see if he is unusually active. My papa was like that - he seemed angry. Next, he lured her into his love shack LOL. After that, he refused to come out.
I think mine are trying to have as many as possible because there is no threat to them in the tank as far as other fish go, plus they're fed well. It's their 46 gallon love nest LOL. They had more eggs about 2 weeks after these hatched. I took them out The papa immediately started stalking the mama again, the little horny devil:twisted:
Adorable little ones. I'm glad you posted this last video. After watching it I'm now convinced I do have a fat female BN. She looks just like yours. I was worried it was a common pleco but now I know she's not. Thanks
I'm no expert so she may be a common. The guy on Aqua Bid had three longfins for sale. I wrote and asked him if he would be willing to sell just one male. (Stupid me didn't realize his 3 were too small to sex) So he sent me a big male with tiny bristles coming out and the female. So your guess is as good as mine as to whether she's a bristlenose or not.
Aww I want some of the babies! But I am in Cali.. kinda a long shipment for the lil guys.. If you can't get rid of them feel like shipping a few overnight would be happy to take some.
Where are you located i would pick some up and give them to a local club or fishstore. My lfs is tropic isle and pretty much everyone who knows about it knows what they are doing.
I'm in North Florida. That would be great as long as you know they'll go to a good home. I hate the thought of giving them to a fish store like Pet Smart or Petco. But if your LFS takes good care of their fish, I wouldn't mind.
Not too pretty right now I'm afraid.... poop and slimy veggie matter all over the place. But they seem to like to eat it just before it falls apart. Plus, they won't give it up when I pull it out. I have to literally push them off.
Latest video. This is really the first time the parents have been out lounging together. They let me take their pictures with the camera light on. But I think the male is stalking the female, waiting for his chance to make more babies.
You know, I wish that were true, but my water is SO hard, the algae is hard as a rock if they don't eat it right away. Maybe the little guys' teeth will grow so that they'll be able to break it off, but so far I've had to scrap it. Good thing is that all of it falls to the bottom and boy do they like that!
They're so cute! I've been looking into getting some myself. I want one! LOL I love the castle that you have too. Very nice set up you have for them there..
Well I have 32, and only 8 are spoken for. When they get bigger, you can have some if you like. I'm planning on keeping some of the boys. No girls though -- don't want any more babies! I'm going to wait until their bristles come in so I'll be able to sex them.
I'm in Florida too so they wouldn't have far to travel. :-D
Latest video taken today. The largest ones are about an inch and a half. The runts are almost an inch. There are yellow ones and white ones, long fins, short fins and in betweens. The larger ones are taking over the castle.
Nuther video taken today. I caught the momma out. The parents don't come out when the light is on any more. She must have been really hungry. I threw in some zucchini and she stayed out for a while. I think she was able to get a bite or two LOL!
