If I was breeding bettas (which I'm not right now but will be in spring), are filters absolutely necessary? Do they contribute to the fry developing labyrinth organs? Thanks again! :redyay:

Filters are not absolutely necessary. Live plants and water changes basically perform what we hope to get with filters. I don't know about the labyrinth organ.

When the fry are a week old its a good idea to have a seasoned sponge filter in the tank with them. Just keep in on low output for a couple weeks and up the flow as they grow. Its important to have it running because the sudden buildup of ammonia is possible without one and lots of waste producing fry in the tank. Ammonia is deadly for young fry imo.

I'm pretty certain that the fry will develop a labyrinth organ no matter what - it's in their genetics.
