So I have anew 10 gallon tank, just trying to get back into doing this as a adult always had a tank as kid but my parents handeled it. So my question is are bottom feeders something I should have in the tank.

Bottom feeders like corydoras would love your 10 gallon and would suit them well. They help eat any fish leftovers that could polute the tank, so yeah, they would excellent additions. :) A school of 6 would be good.. they like their own company.

Sterbai corydoras species. These guys look fantastic with their awesome spots and patterns, and orange coloration on their bottom body, in my opinion. I think they are a tad more expensive than your average peppered corydoras, but worth it to get them I'd say. Panda cories are cool as well. It's up to you. :)

Sterbai aren't suitable for a 10 gallon.

Corydoras hasboras - Salt and Pepper Cory
Corydoras pygmaeus - Pygmy Cory
Corydoras hastatus - Dwarf Cory

The above three are good options for a 10 gallon. Just remember to get a group of 6 and have a soft substrate, like sand or fine, rounded gravel so you don't damage their barbels.

 Ehhh.. Well, okay, you're right, Flint.. I guess they aren't suitable.. they do get a little big for a 10 gallon.. Only about half of 6 would be all right in a 10, but they won't be happy in small numbers.. Those smaller species of cories Flint mentioned should do better in a 10 without getting cramped... Sorry Tim, take Flint's suggestions instead :p

Honestly I don't think bottom feeders are necessary. I think they're a fish you should only get if you like the fish itself.
Food should never make it to the bottom of the tank if you're feeding properly.
If you feel like you need a clean up crew, get Nerite snails. They're the bomb and do a great job cleaning, and can't breed in fresh water. They also come in a large array of various patters and shells.
