I have a Fluval C4 and it’s tolerable quiet and then loud and then back to quiet and so on. I know AquaClears use the same motor and impeller as the Fluval c-series. So I don’t see how the AquaClears are quieter than the Fluval C-series filters. For anyone who has an AquaClear is it silent right out of the box and years later? Also, how does the sound of it compare to the Marineland Penguin series?

From my experience, the noise factor is usually caused by trapped air in the unit causing the impeller to spin erratically trying to expel the air. Maybe check for cracks in the plastic intake or is there an air stone in the tank allowing air bubbles to get sucked into the HOB.

Also impellers can get clogged with dirt too & start to struggle or simply wear out & need replacing.

I’ve taken it apart three times and cleaned it as best as I could. As much as I love this filter I’m done with the noise.

My Aquaclears sometimes rattle. I found that it was vibration causing the lid/top to rattle. I have a couple of glass Angel fish so I put one on top as a weight. That solved the issue.

Over time, you can have wear on the metal pin that the impeller slides over. I suppose this can cause a wobble in the impeller that could make noise. These metal pins and imellers are replaceable parts.
