About a week ago I went into my secondary LFS with my friend and her 2 kids. It's a local chain petstore, and we were getting supplies for fish and other critters. Although we weren't there to buy any fish, of course we had to look anyways. I browsed along the row of tanks as usual until I came upon a tank full of white mollies that had been tattooed with pink and blue stripes and spots. I was so shocked that "Oh my God! What the hell!?" fell right out of my mouth. My friend's 9 year-old son was standing next to me and asked what was the matter. I explained to him about tattooed and dyed fish and the whole horrible process they go through. There was another customer standing nearby.... I hope he heard what I said. I was so outraged that I put everything that I was going to buy back on the shelf. When an employee asked me if I was finding everything ok, I stated that I would no longer shop there because I had already had a discussion with the manager about Glofish, but this was more than I was willing to tolerate. She was very apathetic and said "Well, we're not going to stop carrying them." To which I responded "Have it your way then. I'm going across the street to Petsmart. Bye." :redmad:

There is a little bit of good news though. Yesterday my friend called me and told me that her son is now adamant about humane treatment of fish. He vehemently refuses to buy anything from a store with tattooed or dyed fish. I'm very angry at the store, but I'm now proud of this kid for being concerned for the welfare of animals that usually get treated like disposable objects.

GOODBYE AND GOOD RIDDANCE TO PET WAREHOUSE!!!

my lfs has glofish but no tattooed fish (thank god). The glofish are ridiculously outpriced so i dont think many people will buy them. I just hope one day they get rid of them all together.

Yeah all the local fish stores in my area sell dyed fish. so i really cant put up a protest. My pal called me to come see soem fish he got recently i took one look and was like you know those are dyed right. He just looked at me. Its horrible that places feel the need to torture fish just so that they look more tropical. If you want colorful fish buy a saltwater tank and leave the poor fish alone for peopel who can appreciate thier natural bueaty.

if you want a red colored danio, why dont you just get a red velvet swordtail, there both red, but ones natural and the other isnt, and who wants the letters "i love you" on a fish??? Whats wrong with putting it on a teddy bear and giving it to your girlfriend, why do you have to take another life just to "please" other people?

I agree with you all, its so sad what people will do to animals just to make the almighty buck. There should be laws put in place to eliminate this kind of abuse to pets.. :(

At least with GloFish the babies have a chance of being sterile and carry the gene, with dyed fish, especially parrots, I've heard of cases where the fish are rendered sterile. Which is an addition onto the already sterility.

Yeah, I don't get the weird hybrids either. As we all learned in Biology 101, certain species cannot crossbreed and produce viable offspring... for a reason. I think mother nature has put these safeguards in place because she knows a whole lot better than we do :p
