I have 3 angelfish that live in my 65g tank along with other tank mate - look in siggy. All three are silver angelfish however 1 is a veil tail. Since I first got them they all have pretty short fins however once in the tank they bloomed and had fabulous finnage.
However the veiltail has a problem with one of its ventral fins. The fin hasn't grown since I first got it and today while looking at it I noticed that it is a slight knob at the bottom. However the other fin has grown fine and is 2 times longer than the abnormal fin.
The angel also has a small black dot on one of its pectoral fin rays and I am curious on what it could be - maybe the fin grew in a weird way? The dot is the size of pin prick, easily less than a millimeter.
I know that it is common for veil tail angelfish to have bent rays in it finnage however can I rectify this or is it how the fish is?
I seen a person on youtube cut a tail of a arrowana as it rays were deformed and the person said that getting rid of the tail - not all the tail, just the affected part - and letting it grow back will fix it. Could this work on my finnage problems - especially the ventral fin - or would it be a waste of time?
Thanks guys it not the most normal question...

Is it possible you can post a picture?

And I don't know if I would recommend cutting the fin off in order to fix it, they may do more ham than good.

Hi,
I managed to get some pics, they aren't the best since I couldn't find my good camera, so I had to use a very outdated one.
The fish on the left is the one I am talking about, see how the ventral fins are different lengths? And on the smaller one, you might be able to make out the knob.

Showing the bent tail fin, lately the dorsal fin has been looking a bit ratty, however it seems to be growing back fine.

Another pic showing the bent tail fin and the different length of ventral fins. On this one, it is slightly easier to see the knob.

I tried getting a pic of the black dot on the pectoral fin, however it was on it left hand side and didn't want to show me that side.
Regards,
aussie

Hmmm, that is strange about the different sized ventrals. Is there even a slight chance it was nipped when he/she was younger and perhaps the way it healed prevented it from growing?

As for the tail, it looks like it could just be a physical deformity. Where did you guys these guys? I'm wondering if maybe this one got beat up a little in whatever tank they were in before you got them.

Yes, that is what I am talking about. I doesn't affect it at all, it just makes my baby look lopsided. I am not sure if it was nipped as i got it from the store about 2 months ago, however all angels in there were in great conditions besides the fins were a bit on the small side - probably due to nipping each others fins.
Here is a pic of the fish when I first got it:

It looks normal besides it looking a little bit stunted IMO, I didn't know about it until I got home and when i placed it in the tank and saw it shoaling with the other angels that the eyes were the same size however this one had a smaller body.

I never really paid much attention to it when I noticed this video and got me thinking of my angel. Then I happened to notice the knob on the ventral and thats what got me thinking if I got rid of the knob it might grow correctly.

My Electric Blue Jack Dempsey has a similar "knob" on its left pectoral fin. I originally thought it was from when he was flashing and rubbed up against the rocks. I'm not sure what it is yet tough. When I first noticed, she wasn't using the fin very much so it had just happened. Now, the marks are still there but she uses the fins normally.

How is your angel using that ventral fin?

I hope you find out what it is and if I find anything out I will let you know.

Well my angel used the fin like every other angel, it more of a sight "hazard" than anything. However at times I do feel like (s)he is on an angle before I realise it is the fin not the fish... :)
