I don't know if this is abnormal or not. I've noticed this ocassionally with other fish in the past -- particularly catfish/sharks/loaches. But one of my angels is doing it and I find it quite annoying. :?

The angels are always hungry hungry hungry. Well, I noticed one of them (the smaller of the two) passess all his food through his gills? He grabs all the biggest chunks and a clouds of tiny pieces comes out his gills and no one wants that -- too small.

What's this about? Is this a waste of food?

Nothing wrong with that IMO. I have my angelfish doing the same thing.

Tiny bits are often not eaten at all as they can't easily be seen by the fish. Both of my golden angelfish also keep chomping my lotus.:blueshake: At least, they get to help me prune this crazy-growing plant.:mrgreen:

There's nothing wrong with your angelfish. I would say that is normal.

not to scare anyone, but my friend had a foot long oscar doing that and in a bout a month after he began doing that, he died...

this is not a fact based comment at all (except for the fact that he did a similar thing to yours and that he died) so i might be completely off in my conjecture

How frequent does that oscar do the same thing? Scary though.:blueshake:
Mine does it only if the food are flakes but this happens only occassionally which I have thought is just normal.:squint:
Cichlids tend to eat the food in a manner that they are trying to break it into tiny pieces-small enough for them to eat properly.

yes... it was a bit scary to see pieces of food flying out of the gills... :shock:

My angels do not "spit out" food through their gills but take in food and then ocassionally spit it out in small pieces.

Not a problem as the cories, plecs and yoyo's clean it up.

Fish food coming out of the angel's gill isn't a problem, and is actually quite common.

I think it's caused by them eating too quickly.
