so I started off with 4 dime sized angels knowing there would probably be loss (the store said the young ones are hard to keep) so im down to one does he need a friend? he lives with 2 blue groumies (sp?) 1 dwarf flame, 2 bolivian rams and a bumble bee cat fish in a 29 gal. So is he ok by himself?

Angels can do fine in singles actually. You can get him a friend, or two, if you want. If you do get more, I suggest odd numbers. Some can pull off even numbers, and after a certain point it doesn't matter if you're odd or even(after five or so). But if you want to get him a pair of friends, and if you have space, go for it. Sometimes just adding one more to a single can lead to trouble though not always, so be prepared.

Just make sure the others died from being difficult like the shop said...angels really aren't that hard, so make sure it wasn't an illness or problem in the tank(be it water, space or tankmates) before you get more, and be sure to QT them first. =)

I love angels. I have 5. The smaller ones, in my experience, are more sensitive. If you're getting them from a chain store like PetSmart remember that they are going to be a little more sensitive. I drip acclimate every new fish I bring home. I learned this when best friend worked at mom and pop fish store. I learned that PetSmart just floats bags and dumps the fish into the display tanks. This is not good for them. They may leo be stressed out by the gouramis. I used to keep them before I decided on angels. Gouramis can be very aggressive. Not that angels are peacekeepers but I think gouramis are way more aggressive in my experience. Also I am concerned about putting all of them in a 29 gallon. Angels can get quite large at 6 inches. The blue gouramis can get to 6 inches too.

the 30 is only for there young age i was told I would have at least a year before he got big enough to need to be moved (the hope is a 55-75) I did get them from pet smart I dont have alot of option when it comes to fish and like to be able to see what im buying before I buy it. I might make the trip into milwaukee for some fish stores(its a half hour drive) and see if there are some nice young angels if not then ill just leave him to be. he is doing really well and is becoming the lively one of the tank (the others are big wusses)

Provided the right environment they can grow pretty quickly. I have 3 that have doubled in size in 3-4 months. I wouldn't suggest any more inhabitants. Without the proper room one or more of them could turn highly aggressive and, I've tried, you can't stop fish fights.

Ok thanks ill switch my tropicals into the 30 and the cichlids into the 55 once hes a little larger, right now everyone is hard enough to find since there so little and everything is so planted
