I have found that the whisper air pumps combined with a very fine cylinder air stone inside of the box filter reduces the noise significantly but It still can be heard.

if you want to quiet an air pump,put it in a sock or recycle a mesh fruit bag and hang it.

How to quieten your air pump
1) place air pump on floor
2) take big hammer
3) smash that sucker into three or four piece
4) go to nearest pet store ( CAUTION Stopping to look at any type of fish can result in MTS)
5) buy new air pump, problem solved

I fold a small hand towel two or three times and rest the pump motor on it.

Combining Sandy and Tolak's advice, I wrap mine in a towel and hang it from the wall around the corner from my tanks. I hang it higher than the tank, so I don't need a check valve.
