Some of the better plant keepers I know swear by actinic as being beneficial for providing more of a variety of wave lengths of light and plants do actually do better when using it. But remember, this has to be coupled with enough light for the plants to thrive WITHOUT the actinic.
i.e. 90 gallon high light would be around 180 watts of quality high lumen lighting in the correct Kelvin rating between 5,500K and 10,000K. Adding actininic does not increase your total light output but does increase the total spectrum that the plants get and will benefit them. Just don't count the Actininc toward your calculations.
OK, thanks guys...Original plan was Aqualight 2x96W PC, both lamps 10,000 K, but found the dual satellite for about $45 cheaper. But given your info and some real bad reports on the fan noise, I think I'll go back to the original plan!
if you look at the graph on a coralife 6700 k bulb (and I imagine any other full spectrum bulb), there is some light in the near ultravoilet reagon of the spectrum to about 400nm. so even if sombody wanted to say that actinic was important for plants, about every full spectrum bulb has atleast some. and I beleive okiemavis is mistaken, green light is actually the most useless light for plants, and this is the reason why most plants are green.
Yea, i've pretty mcuh decided that the 192W of 6700/10000K should be just ducky, but am anticipating the need for CO2 supplementation--I really would like to see nice lush plant life, not only for the benefit of the fish and my own eye, but the algae fighting properties as well!!
I have a 10 gallon newly planted tank with a beta, 2 panda cats, 1 mystery snail and 1 otto (I have a friend coming for him, his original friend scooted out of the tank and I found him too late - he was in the corner like he scooted up the seam of the tank). I have a narrow leaf chain...
I am fairly new to the planted tank game.
-20 ghost shrimp
-Java Moss on driftwood
-8 Crypt Greens
-No CO2 System
-Using Aquarium Co-Op Easy Green
-Using Seachem Flourish Root Rabs
*In your experience, if applicable, how has the API CO2 Booster treated your...
Starting to set up a 55 gallon planted tank with eco complete but I'm having trouble with the planting. The eco complete seems to be too lite and doesn't hold the plants down. Most of the plants are now floating on top. Anyone got any advise.
