A Basic Approach??

I just finished reading A Basic Approach. I have a question regarding lighting. I understand what was covered and thank you for the information! very helpful...:-D

My question being: I have a 54Gal corner tank and it sits in the corner of my living room. At the end of one of the paragraphs states "Ensure that the room allows for a minimum of 10 hours of complete darkness each day."

Are we talking complete darkness as in tank lights off? Or are we talking no room lights or no light from the TV? Because honestly unless I was to move the tank to my basement which is totally unrealistic because no one would ever see it including myself, no where in my home has complete darkness for ten hours. I have 4yr old twins which explains that. lol

Would appreciate any advise...:-D

Well both fish and plants need complete darkness at night.

In some cases this can be hard to achieve in the home aquarium I understand. There are ways of getting this and still having some lights on in the home at night. The easiest is just to cover the tank up with a blanket, towel, or sheet at a certain time every night.

Btw Welcome to Tropical Fish Keeping!

IME just normal room type darkness will be fine. I presume the room lights are off at night.
Off, yes, but they usually the lights are turned off anywhere from 10:30pm and usually back on around 8ish. There are also windows but blinds are always drawn down...

I agree with Boredom. I put a blanket over mine at night. I believe it's good for the fish and plants. Just turn tank lights off 15 mins before adding the blanket and wait 15 after removing the blanket before turning on tank lights.
