29gal bow front setup question

1001 Views 8 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  frogman1980
im getting everything together for a 29gal bow front that i was given second hand with a stand. im going to try my hand at a full planted tank. i have been reading a lot on here and have stuff narrowed down some. my step mom gave me the tank and she guilted my dad into buying me a filter for it (this thing was a bear to get to my house in a Toyota Corolla). so i have a api nexx canister filter. i have the substrate and a aqueon 150w heater. i need to get a full spectrum bulb for the fixture and ill be ready to set it up and start the cycle. i will be changing the light fixture out for something else soon. my plan is to do i low tech setup for this one. i do plan to start adding plants during the cycle and after about three weeks transferring in a few fish.

this is where i get lost in my thinking. i have never used a canister filter before. how does the water get O2 into it other than a water change. i would really like to keep this natural and not sure i want to add an air stone.

any help would be greatly appreciated and any advice on anything i may have over looked as well. thank you.

Canisters are just fantastic. The gas exchange occurs at the surface - the spray bar disrupts the waters surface which allows carbon dioxide in the water to be replaced by oxygen. Air stones are completely unnecessary for the vast majority of setups.
ok. not to sound stupid here but...

1) does that mean that i need to replace the sprayer that came with it with a spray bar?

2) if i use the sprayer that came with it, it doesn't seem like its set up to break the surface tension so what then?

3) this just popped into my head... using the sprayer that comes with it seems like it would create a current inside the tank. is there a certain way the "current" should be setup?

this switch to a canister filter is going to take some figuring out.

Canisters can be intimidating at first, so that's all understandable.

1. No you can use what it came with in almost all situations.

2. What kind of filter is it? All there needs to be is a slight ripple at the surface. Spraybar can be angled up towards the surface if it sits too far below the water line.

3. Yes current in a tank is generally a good thing. My preference is to have the spraybar mounted on the side glass so that it pushes water across the length of the tank. On larger tanks I use two canisters to creat a circular flow in he tank. It's a far more natural current for the fish to live with than having the outflow smash against the front glass, which is how many people have them setup. There's nothing really wrong with doing it that way, but I do think a more linear flow is better for every aspect of keeping the aquarium.
Well the nexx is rated for almost twice the tank size I have. Which leads me to believe that the out flow will be strong. Can I split the out flow and have part at the surface and part lower in the tank for water movement?
Don't pay attention to the ratings - the filter only does 150 gallons per hour. Were it my tank I would have 300 GPH.
i understand. ill have to look into that a little more.

i am actually curious about splinting the out flow from the filter. has anyone done it or is it worth trying?
I believe you can buy bidirectional nozzles for the outflow. You really won't need that on a 29 though.
Just moved everything from my g/f's 10g to my old 20g tall. When I really started looking at her tank she had 17 fish in it. Way too many. She picked up a penguin 200 for it. I really don't think I like it.
