My ten gallon is now vacated so I have another tank to stock!! I love Ember Tetras and Bolivian Ram and I was wondering are they compatible and would this be over stocked?? Ember Tetras are fairly tiny so they don't take up too much space but I haven't done much research on the Rams but aren't they pretty small?? Would a pair of rams be better then one??

Or would it be better to do one or the other and not both types of fish??

Bolivian ram. Suggested tank minimums:

20 gallons for one fish, 2 fish in a 36 inch tank; 3+ in 48-inch tank.

The tetras are a pretty small fish so you could pack in a good number of those. If you were able to add them 5 at a time a couple of weeks apart and you were doing a species tank you could probably get 20 in there to fill the water space.... maybe more if you have a stable balanced setup but you would have to judge that once the 20 were in.

I thought they got too big for a ten gallon, oh well. Are there any other fish I could keep with the tetras if I got less then twenty??

Check out some of the hatchetfish, most of those will fit and are small enough that you could have a descent sized group. They stay near the surface generally so you wouldn't just have two kinds of fish competing for the central water area. Maybe some Pygmy hatchet fish up top and the embers mid water, just double check the water parameters to be sure they are compatible... I think they are though.

I'll keep hatchet fish in mind, but are there any other types of fish where I would just keep a pair of them?? The embers would be dither fish (I think that's the right word) and the other fish could be the center piece. If they are able to be bred that would be a fun challenge. Time to make another list of tankmates they are suitable with >•<

I'm not sure about parameters, but I think Honey Gourami are suitable for a 10 gallon. But only a pair may be too dangerous, the male could harass the female to death :/ Most people who keep them seem to keep a trio (1m/2f) to keep aggression down.

I love gouramis!! Ill look them up. Can they be bred easy(ish) and then move the eggs or do I need to put the parents in a seperate tank and breed them there??

Just a heads up, ill probably change the stocking plan about five thousand times so I'm sorry if I confuse all you good people.
Anyhoo, if I used the ten gallon as the main tank to breed fish in and had a 3.5 to raise fry in (when they are tiny, of course) and id see if I could borrow another ten gallon from my friend, is that suitable?? I know tetras are harder because they don't take care of the fry. Corydoras and gouramis breed in captivity, tetras can, are any cichlids small enough to do breed in a ten gallon??

EDIT: and if I raised then a certain size the small 3.5 tank could I put some back in the ten gallon or my 25 gallon?? I'm guessing that would be plausible more so with tetras?

Sorry if that's confusing, I'm not the best when it come to making sense >•<

Oh i change stock still all the time! It happens.

perhaps shell dwelling cichlids, i think they're really the only ones small enough to live in 10 gallons but i could be wrong. grow out tanks usually need to be pretty large though.....

Well guess I'm not getting cichlids. Oh well. Time to do more research on Ember's, OMG they're gorgeous!! I'm going to try to get some driftwood tomorrow. Are Ember's best with plants or driftwood or does it really matter??

Check the Ember Tetra profile, it will help you. But to short-cut to the direct question, all characins are better with plants and chunks of wood and/or branches.

On other fish, a 10g is pretty small so you are bst with small fish. ET are fine. Corys on the substrate would be OK. A trio of the pygmy sparkling gourami could work.

Bolivian rams ( I assume the cichlids) are not going to go with anything but cichlids in the first place and secondly they will overgrow a 10 gallon in a short time. You could try a pack of 6 panda or albino Corydoras to keep the tank clean and they make it pretty.
