- depending on the species of barbs, it can cause problems with the guppies

I would. A solid base supporting at least the corners will help keep the tank frame - silicone - together and ensure it doesnt split.

I wouldn't consider it overstocked at all, and would probably suggest once the tank is stable - mostly ammonia goes way down to 0 - and no longer battling disease, to get some more cories...
