Driftwood leaking pesticides?
Hey so I'm a little confused on this, I have a 50 gallon betta sorority tank, it has 2 large pieces of spiderwood, a bunch of seiryu stone and is fully planted.
My issue is that my fish have been getting sick seemingly randomly. My bettas have had issues with a fungus and then once that seemed to be under control started to pinecone. Right now I have 17 of the 21 girls left but Im not sure what I'm doing wrong.
A friend of mine said it is possible the spider wood is leaking a pesticide? But if that is the case what should I do?
Originally I boiled all my stones, and the wood to the best of my ability (I have a tiny kitchen and they are BIG so they dont reallly fit in a pot).
Boiling stones is VERY dangerous - water trapped inside the rock can cause it to explode. FYI.
Fish dying here and there doesn't necessarily mean that you are doing anything "wrong". However, I wouldn't hesitate to throw my money down on the "sorority" setup as the culprit. Seen it soooooooo many times. Stress is a silent killer, and undoubtedly some of your fish are better suited to the high stress environment you are keeping them in. The fish that aren't just simply aren't going to make it over the long haul.
I know that's not what you want to hear, but that's the ugly truth of the "Betta sorority".
It's not the sorority aspect of it making them sick, I've had sororities for years and know what to watch for as far as signs of stress go. These girls were upgraded to this tank and have been perfectly fine together for quite some time now.
Disease manifested by a high stress environment is far more plausible a reason for the fish dying than the driftwood leaking pesticides. I have seen people come up with far more ridiculous excuses for why their "sorority" failed, though.
One thing I want to clarify though - losing a few fish doesn't mean it's failing as a whole, but that it has failed for those particular fish.
I feel as though I'm coming off as rude and I want to make sure that you know that's not my intent. I definitely understand what you mean about failed sororities and the excuses people throw out there, some are straight up absurd.
We added a ton of poly filter (I already had some in my filter but said screw it and threw it directly into the tank to float around as well) and everything seems to be fine now. I have no idea what happen but I'm glad my girls are happy again.
