Levimasole treatment disaster
Treated 10 g quarantine tank with 0.6 g 99% pure levimasole HCI powder (recommended dose per Subquaria where it was purchased) to rid of callamanus worms. Within an hour 3 previously appearing healthy red rasbora were dead, the sick black neon tetra with worms dead too, the rest distressed. Immediately removed the surviving fish and put into my main tank without even acclimatizing since I was afraid there was no time. They seem to be recovering now.
What went wrong? Did Subaquaria's incorrect recommended dosage kill my fish?
I am beyond upset since I made sure the dosage was measured correctly before adding it in.
How did you calculate 0.6 grams?
Levamisole dose is 2 mg/liter (2 ppm) of Levamisole base. I assume you have Levamisole hydrochloride. If 2mg/l, you will need 76 mg for a 10 gallon. If you use hydrochloride salt, that will translate to 89 mg Levamisole HCL for a 10 gallon tank.
89 mg= 0.089 grams.
You used about 7 times that dose
I used the amount recommended by the supplier:
Levamisole HCl Powder — dewormer that works!
Why would they recommend using over 7 times quantity of safe dose?
Even at 7 times the dose, the Median Lethal Dose (250 mg/l) is more than 100 times the recommended dose, according to supplier and this site also:
How did you prepare the quarantine tank?
