local stockist
i have been told that you should only get fish from the same stockist to prevent contamination, is that correct? i have found that my local stockist has gone down hill in terms of variety and the last time i went there a few fish were just dead in the tanks.

Whenever you get new fish, its best to put them in a quarantine tank for a day or 2 to prevent any diseases from entering your community tank.

I buy my fish from 3 or 4 different LFS.

Well, quarantine is really only effective if you keep them in it for at least 3-4 weeks. It is the best approach though.

Your local fish store gets all their fish from many different sources/suppliers. So there's really no point in only getting your fish from one supplier unless it's a local breeder.

If you aren't going to quarantine the fish at home, you could look for a LFS that does it themselves. I found one near me that keeps all of their new arrivals in isolated (I mean the tanks, not necessarily the fish) quarantine for a month before they go in the sale tanks. During my last visit there, I didn't see a single sick or dead fish in any tanks.

Wow, I bet their prices are pretty high though. For most places it would be great to do that, but it's just not feasible. Granted, I live in the city, so real estate isn't cheap.

My LFS doesn't automatically QT, but they are very good about QTing any tank with a single sick fish in it. They're also very quick to advise you not to buy fish that have just come in, or let you know when some fish have been in the tank forever, and are very healthy.

Mostly it just comes down to picking out healthy stock from a reputable store.
