Who said “damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead”?

August 5, 1864 dawned with a gentle haze that turned the sky a milky white and the sea as smooth as glass. The 18 federal warships approached the channel to Mobil bay in two columns. The confederate guns from fort Morgan began firing on the attacking union flotilla their shells splashing around the lead ships which returned fire, the white smoke from the ships broadsides began to obscure their formation. The battle for Mobil bay began.
Admiral David Farragut planned to lead the attack in the flagship Hartford, but was prevailed upon to let the sloop Brooklyn go first behind the iron clad Tecumseh followed by the Harford. As the two columns entered the bay the confederate iron clad Tennessee was sighted steaming toward the union flotilla.Captain Craven of the iron clad Tecumseh started moving left in order to intercept the Tennessee forcing the wooded ships in the left column into the torpedo (mine) field. Seeing the waiting torpedoes captain Alden of the lead ship Brooklyn ordered his ship to stop.Behind the stopped Brooklyn admiral Farragut climbed part way up the Hartford’s rigging to see over the smoke that was billowing over the deck.Fearing the admiral might fall flag-ship captain Drayton ‘sent up a signalman with a piece of line to secure the admiral to the rigging. Farragut at first refused, then seeing the wisdom of it, passed the line around his body a few times and gave the loose ends to the signalman, who secured him to the rigging.’ Suddenly off to the right there was an explosion of a confederate torpedo and the Tecumseh sank in less than 30 seconds. While still lashed to the rigging Admiral David Farragut said “Damn the torpedoes, three bells ahead”. Over time the language has changed the saying to damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.

Memorial Day was at one time known as Decoration Day and originated after the civil war to commemorate the fallen.

Admiral David Glasgow Farragut said it. To quote him exactly he said: "Damn the torpedoes! Four bells! Captain Crayton, go ahead! Joucett, full speed!"

Since you have the quote, were you asking or just posting an interesting column? lol

Turning on the Aquarium lamp in the morning is MY cup of coffee.
