Black sludge on rock spreading? Thick, rubbery?

There is this thick black spongy substance in my tank.. I've asked about it before on here, but didn't really have much to ask about; now the sludge has spread quite a bit in little patches over the rock; it is black and it has little air bubbles trapped on it, it is spongy, it bounces back when I poke it, it doesn't come away from the rock easily and it is definitely encrusting. It seems to grow "up" instead of "across"; like there will be tube-shaped parts of it that stick up.The clean up crew won't touch it and it seems to spread more with more light. This doesn't seem like cyano. What could it be?? Toxic ?? How to remove it??

Well if it gains its shape again after being pressed in and has air bubble trapped inside of it then it sounds like a different form of turf algae. I have some sponges that appear to be similar but when pressed in they do not regain their shape and there are not trapped air bubbles. Both of these nuisances can be partially controlled with a kalkwasser paste that is applied via plastic syringe. The best style of applicator comes with the aptasia X kit, you may be able to use a pipet if you do not have access to the syringes. Make sure to turn off the pumps before you make the application and leave them off for about an hour to let things burn out, also when using Kalkwasser you cannot use too much in one dosing as it will raise your PH and calcium levels.

Another thing that I have yet to try is hydrogen peroxide, you can try and turn the pumps off again and use a syringe to blast some hydrogen peroxide on the effected area.

It is possible to get an urchin in there to eat some algae but some times it is a hit or miss with them eating turf algae.
