I was told to contact you about my beta. He is two years old, and he lives in a small tank (I was told that they prefer this). I have plastic plants, and recently added two different ones. He's usually very active, but he's been staying at the bottom of his tank for the last two days, and I noticed that he has a bulge right under his skin on his right side, and he seems very unhappy. He's part of our family, and my daughter will be devastated if anything happens to him. Can you help?

I am so stressed over this. (The first rainbow that I took back to store had what looked like a little white inside the mouth after the little hanging ball felt off. I asked the store how to treat tank to prevent spreading to other fish but they said if other fish were ok, not to treat as they thought it may be viral. :( I will send you a pic later when the camera battery charges. Thank you in advance for your time and help. I hope you see this message soon.
I had to split the message as it wouldn't let me send the long one.

The tank finished cycling 4 days ago and has been steady. I introduced 5 new rainbows yesterday (tried 3 but had to go back for 2 more because there were territorial issues which seem to resolve by night time. Today one of the turquoise ones had a small white fuzzy ball kind of hanging off the mouth just like the other one did.I am waiting for my good camera battery to charge to take a pic with the good lens to send you.My research has only lead to a lot of confusion and I surely do not want to medicate again and make things worst. I need your help! In the tank I have 6 rainbows, 2 cory's, 7 cherry barbs and a tiny brittlenose pleco. (The cherry barbs have been hiding since the ick treatment but about 4 of them come shyly out to eat. :(

Hi. I found one of your old posts regarding a white spot on the mouth of a rainbow fish. You sound very knowledgeable and your information was very helpful. I have a 55 gal tank with rainbow fish. I originally introduced 2 boesemani's and one developed the white fuzzy (kind of hanging) spot on the mouth which later felt off. I took him back to the store as the mouth seem to have some white inside. Originally I thought it was ick and treated for ick for 3 days but stopped as my cherry barbs where reacting badly to it. :( Your post stated that some fish react badly to medications and that was definitely the case, I wish I had read it sooner. Anyway, my tank's water parameters are very good and I test daily and do water changes often, so ammon. never went above .25 and nitrites never went above .5 (1day) before the water was changed.

You seem to know a lot about GSP and ours is having a problem. Are you still active on this forum?

Hi, I wanted to introduce myself because I was talking to Ron Moneyhan (my Battalion IT guy) about fish. He mention how his son was really into the hobby and did wonders for Hoffer's Aquatic Life Pets. He told me you were really into the hobby as well. Anyways, I ended up getting a 55g and a 30g long from him which I believe were his son's tanks. So, I wanted to say thank you and I think it is awesome that you are helping others learn and expand their knowledge of the hobby.

Thank you Jack. It gets easier when you do this for a living and are trained to handle things in a professional way. Patience is key to success in this hobby and what better way to teach it than by example?
