    can't reply in thread so will try here.
    yes plants will consume nitrates and phosphatea and co2 as well.
    In a mature tank the bacteria gets ammonia, the plants nitrates.
    but when the bacteria can't handle the ammonia as in a new tank or a tank that had some stress, the plants consume ammonia and nitrate4s can rise. Which is much healthier than a dangerous ammonia spike and possible tank crash.
    Don't know at what level nitrates affect fish but I have had nitrates ov 60-160ppm for months in my saltwater tanks with healthy fish.
