Water flow for 300 gal freshwater aquarium

I have a 300gal aquarium using a 50 gal sump for filtration. The tank used to be a marine tank with a 3/4hp pump that is far to powerful for the small tetras I keep in the well planted tank. My question is what should the water flow be in gal/hr?

I would personally aim for somewhere between the 2000-3000 gph...

Wow!

2000-3000gph! with that amount of flow am I not in danger of stressing the fish out? The fish I have are neon's, cardinals, golds, diamonds etc. I was expecting an answer of around 850gph. Am I looking at this all wrong?

I aim for around 8-10x the tank volume. Having decor will disperse the flow as well as how the inputs are set up.

(All fish can easily handle that flow rate in such a large tank.)

I'm running an 1100gph pump at the moment, I have a spare that I was keeping as a backup. I can relatively easily parallel it to give me 2200gph. I hope that will be enough.

Would be doing around 7.3x per hour. Which I think is fine for the fish you have.
