Question Water Filter Recommendations

I just got a 5.5 gallon tank for my Betta fish. I was hoping to get some recommendations of the different brands of water filters. I am hoping to find a reasonably priced one that is on the quieter side. I will also be getting a water heater so if you have suggestions for those, I would love to hear them.

Thanks!

Your best bet is probably a sponge filter, maybe something like this hooked up to an air pump. It's very economical, small, and low flow which the betta will like and can be hidden by decor. It can be super quiet, too, depending on your air pump.

If you want something like an HOB filter, I personally like the AquaClears and they make one that ranges from 5 to 20 gallons. I have the AquaClear 30 on a bigger tank so I'm not sure if the flow of the smaller model would be too much for a betta or not... but it is slightly adjustable and you can always baffle it if it deems too much for your fish. They're more expensive (~25 USD) and recently were acquired by Fluval so you may need to search for it under that brand name.

I've also seen that lots of people use/like the Marineland Penguin biowheel HOB filters. They're definitely cheaper than the AquaClears @ about $13 (Amazon). I haven't used them myself so I can't comment too much but if you do a search or read some reviews, I'm sure this could be a good option, too, and cheaper than an AquaClear if price is the deciding factor.

As for water heaters... I just have the standard glass one that was a hand-me-down in my smaller tank... nothing special and gets the job done. My 55 gallon has an Aqueon Pro which is doing really well but maybe a bit expensive. Really, anything will probably work but I wouldn't get a preset heater. Who knows, maybe that 5.5 gallon leads to a 55 gallon like it did with me and then you'll want more control over the temperature
