New Goldfish, he saved Spock! Pearlscale?

Is that a pearlscale goldy? Oops.

I've had a fantail goldfish for about a year or so now, Mister Spock...he was a nice little rescue, lost his tail and bottom fins to my six mosquitofish right after that. Oops, the little brats are supposed to get along in big open things like that! >< I had actually forgotten they were in the pool, had six of them and they chewed him up overnight so I immediately removed him and fixed him up. Took time, but he got better, then he got lonely.

Anyways, got him his own tank and a buddy soon as I could find one...unfortunately his first buddy also decided to be a jerk and attacked him, taking his left pectoral fin. His second buddy was Chuck, an even tempered young fantail. They bonded really tightly, but unfortunately Chuck died about a month ago after being together for about nine months. Unknown reasons.

Anyways, I got a new buddy for him finally. I've been looking. It's hard to find healthy goldies here, and nice ones online are really expensive. x.x Spock actually had refused to eat for a month and I was preparing to euthanize him, but then I found Ferdy! Yes, Ferdinand(like Magellan). First thing he did after I put Ferdy in with him after some...odd behavior I'm not that familiar with, was he ATE! YAY! Now I just need to keep him eating normally, he'll put his weight back on at a safe speed this way. I'm so happy. Some slip ups there on my part, but I didn't want to lose him, I love that fish. Was a last-ditch effort to save him, though I did not QT Ferdy first...time was of the essence and I hope it doesn't bite me in the butt. Here's to hoping!

The white Calico one or the orange smaller calico? Neither are a pearlscale. (True) Pearls are much rounder bodied (very short), have very short tails, and of course, pearly scales. There's a difference between the regular irid, flat scales that a lot of goldies have and the thicker, rounder, pearls

Oh, duh me I forgot to say who is who. The brighter orange one that is smaller is the one I think is a pearlscale, he IS fat bodied with a very short tail and larger looking scales. His tail isn't damaged, or doesn't look to be. He's also one I got from a pet shop, and you never know with them.
If not pure...can they mix-breed then? The big white calico is Spock. :3

They can mix and be partial pearls. You'd have to get a closer picture. He's actually very long bodied to be a pearl (my bestie raises pearls). He should be half the length and like a golf all or ping pong ball, just totally round. Calicos often have heavy irid as well, untill I see a closer pic, I'm sticking to my previous decision of nonpearls.

Yeah, I've seen how some pearls look. I'm kinda hoping he's not a pearl, or at least pure one. They look like they have trouble getting around.

I'll see if I can get a proper photo of him later on. ^_^

Anyways, Spock had an immediate attitude change, they are always hanging out, he's brighter, he's eating three times a day(and getting peas, I dunno if it was due to starving and being weak or swimbladder, but he was swimming with his back end going up a lot, he's not so much anymore but I wanted to be safe over sorry).

Yeah, I think it's just an odd fantail. It doesn't have all pearl-like scales, but it does have some. I've never seen one in person...

These are the best photos I could get, he or she does not hold still. lol Video too. Couple are video shots.

True Pearls, yeah, when they're all balloon-y, yeah that's when they have troubles. But your new one has the posibility of carrying the geno but he's definitely not even a partial pearl.

Here is a partial Pearl for your comparison, see how the pearls kind of elevate from the skin versus laying flat? That's what you're looking for in a partial pearl.

Okay, so did I manage to get a fantail like I wanted? :3 He's got a few scaled that look more like beads like on yours, but not too many. I assumed he was something else and had a few damaged scales(he was being kept with goldies even bigger than Spock there, Spock is being nice though...but Ferdy is chewing his tail sometimes! >/), or had some pearlscale in him.

He just doesn't look the right shape for a fantail like Spock did when I got him all tiny and cute like that, his body is a bit longer and his tail was too. They only had shubunkins, koi and other single tails, orandas, fantails and "pearlscales". So now I'm curious what he is. lol I suppose it doesn't really matter unless he's the type to get larger than the average fantail. If he is, that will royally suck, I don't have space for any larger pairs and I love that little guy. >< Of course I intend to try having a nice 125 gallon tank(or larger if I can get ahold of one) by summers end, but that's up in the air right now with vet bills to pay off. I otherwise have a 55 gal for them, though I suppose I can set up the 73 gal kiddie pool for them...It'll be awful if I got a nice baby I can't keep, I don't want them to stunt or get sick, so I'd have to find them a person with a big pond or massive tanks if that happens. =(

I'm no goldfish expert, what I know is mostly centered around Pearls/Ruykins/Fantails so you'll have to forgive me. But 55 is certainly enough for 2 goldies! 30 gallons is your minimum, 55 you could easily have three if you wanted!

He honestly looks like a mix between a Ranchu and a possible Pearl mix. He's got that really short tail classic of Ranchu and Pearl but his body shape is definitely not true Pearl, closest to Ranchu. Possible Oranda mix depending on if his wen grows or not.

Thanks for the tidbits anyways. I don't know them all either.
Oh no, I wouldn't want to keep them in anything smaller, or with more than two in there. I read these guys can get 8 inches so I figure 55 gallons is still a little small for them, but doable. lol They're so fat and flowey. Right now they're in a 30 gallon until bigger.

I wonder if he is an oranda that just hasn't gotten his cap yet(I call the wen a cap), he does kinda remind me of one. I used to rescue orandas and find them good homes since tank life I didn't think was ideal for them since I've seen some top ten inches, and they have such large frames! He does kinda remind me of one, and was in with a bunch of them....Huh, I wouldn't mind having an oranda around again, they're one of my favorites. He is also only like 1.5 inches long. I know he looks bigger, but he's just a fatty. lol Still, he should have some signs of one at this age if he was gonna get one in...however I have seen some lacking them even larger than him and then start to show later(had a pair two years ago, one of them didn't show it at all until about four months after I got it, and they were a tad larger than Ferdy there when I got them).

I think I can house an Oranda now, should he turn out to be one. :3
